Step 1 - Sculpting
I start with a clay sketch or maquette, as seen in the right hand side of the top photo. This small clay sketch is about 8" tall. This particular piece was enlarged to about 24" or 3 times the size of the sketch (below).
Step 2 - Firing
I've worked with many different clays, but my favorite is Aardvark Soldate 60. This is a high fire clay, however I bisque it to cone 2, which is sufficient for sculpture and still works well with low fire glazes.
Step 3 - Glazing
One of my favorite things to do is glaze testing! I love mixing my own glazes, which I fire to a cone 04. I also use a few commercial under glazes.
